The Strawbridge Home for Boys closed its doors in Eldersburg in 1958.

Dayhoff: America 250 Patriot Plaque unveiled at Belle Grove Square

It is only fitting and appropriate that a plaque commemorating the 250th anniversary of the birth of our nation be placed in historic Belle Grove Square.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower served as our 34th president from 1953-1961. He purchased a farm adjacent to the Gettysburg Battlefield, in Adams County, Pennsylvania, in 1950. Of all the presidents of the United States, the one which Carroll County may literally have the closest connection to is Eisenhower. Eisenhower lived on a farm and raised black Angus cattle about 10 miles above the Maryland/Pennsylvania border.

East Main Street – approximately 1950. The former Albion Hotel (on the left) had become the Acme Super Market by the 1950s. The buildings east of the hotel were built in the late 19th century and contained a variety of retail businesses. For much of the 1900s, the ‘community room’ in the Charles Carroll – Westminster Hotel, built in 1898 by George W. Albaugh 117 East Main Street, was the center of the social and business community in Westminster. Longstanding Taneytown official Darryl Hale served in the United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged as a Corporal. He was an exemplary Marine, serving during Operation Desert Shield and Storm. While in service he received many honors, to include; Southwest Asia Service Medal, with 2 Stars, a Navy Unit Citation, USS Portland, a Kuwait Liberation Medal, a Meritorious Unit Commendation, a Navy Unit Commendation, with 1 star, and a Combat Action Ribbon.
