As soon as the government shutdown is ended, the TV-loving politicians need to make and pass a law outlawing government shutdowns (“Government shutdown becomes the longest on record,” Nov. 5). It should make passing a budget and funding bill by July 1 each year mandatory.

In addition, it should penalize each and every senator and representative $10,000 a day if they do not pass such laws. If the shutdown goes past one week, every senator and representative must run for re-election at the end of the year. If the Senate or House shuts down and goes home, every one of them must stand for election at the end of the year.

Like the Democrats want for every criminal, they have given to themselves: bad behavior without any consequences. They have hurt people with their childish behavior. They don’t care about us. This has been about their sense of power and the Democrats’ connection to big health care.

If they don’t pass such a law ASAP, it will be a clear sign of the theatrics of this whole affair. That is, they hurt us for nothing worthwhile.
