At first, I did not like the sound of the title of the Oct. 27 article, “Old, rotting pumpkin? Baltimore County wants you to smash it, not trash it,” but then I remembered a few years ago, when a number of squirrels got into our pumpkin display on Heathfield Road in Baltimore County. The squirrels were hungry, but there was an unexpected benefit. The squirrels spread the pumpkin seeds onto our front lawn, and lo and behold, the following year we had three beautiful pumpkins. So, smash your pumpkins in a controlled space, and you will have unexpected decorations for the Halloween season.
