Old Colts fans owe a debt of gratitude to Marty Domres (“Marty Domres, former Baltimore Colts quarterback, dies,” Oct. 26).
I was with my father at Memorial Stadium on Dec. 3, 1972, for what turned out to be the last home game of the great Johnny Unitas. Unitas had been benched. Before the game, a plane flew over the stadium towing a banner that read “Unitas We Stand.” Domres was leading the team to victory when he feigned an injury late in the game. Onto the field crabwalked Number 19. Within minutes, he lofted an arching pass to receiver Eddie Hinton, who ran 63 yards into the end zone. It was the last touchdown pass Unitas would ever throw in a Colts uniform. My dad broke down in tears, as did almost every other fan there that day.
Thank you, Marty, for giving us that magic moment.
