Letter writer John Gazurian believes that Bible-thumping, gun-toting Southerners who sit around watching porn all day are a bigger problem then all the gun violence that occurs everyday in cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and, yes, Baltimore (“Crime is not just a city problem,” Oct. 16).
I grew up in New Jersey but moved south by choice in my early 20s and lived there most of my long adult life. After experiencing grumpy Northern life, I was pleasantly surprised by how Southerners are gentle and friendly people who like to say “good morning” to strangers walking down the street.
The vast majority of Southerners are not as Gazurian described nor are many Northerners. Regardless, there is one simple answer to the gun question — a constitutional amendment. Strip the U.S. Constitution of the Second Amendment and problem solved.
And, if the majority of Americans agree, then attaining this constitutional change should be simple. Until that happens, major anti-gun legislation can’t prevail against constitutional challenges in court, nor should it. It is the law of the land — as are all the other constitutional rights we have through the courage and brilliance of our founding fathers.
