“Tokhes afn tish.” It’s Yiddish for “tush on the table” and a reminder that Republicans in Washington, D.C., aren’t even willing to talk (“As the shutdown drags on, these people will lose if health care subsidies expire,” Oct. 16).

Will somebody please suggest to the Democratic leadership in Congress that they hold — and widely publicize — open, televised meetings to discuss a compromise with their Republican counterparts?

If the Republicans refuse to come, the Democrats can hold the meetings without them and let the failure of Republicans to attend be the headline of the day.

Democrats should be well-prepared with charts and videos to make their arguments.
