“Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In,” a television comedy show of the 1960s, presented the “Flying Finger of Fate Award” to various public and private sector entities for their dubious achievements. The 2025 Baltimore Ravens would be worthy recipients (“Ravens’ free fall continues with embarrassing 17-3 loss to Rams,” Oct. 12).

They’d be recognized not so much for their hapless play but for the extent to which the fates have stepped in to decimate them with injuries. They are classic victims of circumstance (although it’s probably not fair to blame the gods for careless turnovers). As we call for coaches’ heads, we might also remember the words of Mark Twain in “Pudd’nhead Wilson”: “When ill luck begins, it does not come in sprinkles, but in showers.” When Lamar Jackson, Roquan Smith and other stalwarts come back, maybe the sun will come back too.
